Kapu-kulu

The Chokwe mask called Kapu Kulu means the ancient old one or oldest of old. It represents an ancestor and is not a bird mask. Similar masks and deities appear in the Ubaid Period in Mesopotamia. All Chokwe art forms are said to tell the history of the meaning of the circumcision ritual and it is said that without the circumcision ritual there would be no history of the ritual called Mukanda wa Zambi. Ritual symbols are used as well in relating to the history. High levels of consciousness are expected from all initiates when the ancestors are ceremonialy and ritually appropriated.
